IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE!

Yes, it's true... but why is that? Simply because it has been sixty years since the Pittsford Library Friends group was first organized! So... back in early 1962, a small but determined group of local citizens who loved both books and their library, decided they needed to do more to help their library, which meant so much to them.

Back in those bygone days, the library was crammed into a historic village home, where the Village Offices are now located. There was little space in those crowded rooms for the Friends, as they were a confusing maze of parlors & bedrooms that had been walled with bookshelves.

The Friends made do, focusing on book reviews, improving a children's reading area and garden areas around the building and they even held a book fair to raise funds for various library projects, although I note the minutes stated that "It was not as profitable as hoped.

But, it was a start. At the end of that first year the Friends had over fifty members, had generated $400 from dues and other activities and spent $300 on various library items such as a much needed dehumidifier. They were already planning new and exciting ventures.

Over the ensuing sixty years an endless stream of Friends members have volunteered countless thousands of hours, and generated tens of thousands of dollars for the benefit of our library. We are proud of our history, but more proud of the amazing and inspiring support our efforts have received from our Community.

When the Library moved into what had been the Star Market, the Friends gained their own spaces in the side heating equipment rooms of the basement court room... a true luxury! And now we are truly grateful for our location across from the main library entrance, and would invite all to look in to say hello when

As a result of what has been a true Community effort, Pittsford today has a wonderful library, which is the focal point and heart of our Village and Town. The Friends continue to grow and evolve, and we welcome your membership and support.
